Mt Fuji & Hakone Day Trip by Private Car Details

Plan the route around your group, timing, preferred stops, and vehicle.

Fuji and Hakone are usually sold as two separate day trips because they sit on different rail lines, and connecting them by train means backtracking toward Otsuki or Mishima, which absorbs most of an afternoon. By car the two areas are linked directly, so the day becomes a single loop instead of two half-days. It is still a long day: an early departure protects the Fuji stops, which are clearest in the morning and in the colder months, and leaves enough margin for Hakone before the return drive.

Route character

Two areas in one loop

The Fuji lakeside viewpoints and the Hakone lake and valley are linked directly rather than via a rail transfer.

Timing watch

Early start is decisive

Fuji is generally clearest in the morning and in the colder months, and a late departure usually costs the Hakone half of the day.

Seasonal access

5th Station and Owakudani

The 5th Station road closes over winter, and Owakudani can close on volcanic gas or wind, so a backup stop is planned in advance.

Before You Book

  • Plan on an early departure from Tokyo, since this pairing is the longest of our day routes and the Fuji stops depend on morning conditions.
  • Tell us whether the Fuji viewpoints or the Hakone stops matter more to you, so the schedule can be trimmed from the right end if the roads are slow.
  • Keep one alternative in mind for Owakudani and for the 5th Station, as both can be closed on the day for weather or seasonal reasons.
