Karuizawa is the longest of these Tokyo day trips, roughly 180km each way on the Kan-Etsu and Joshin-etsu expressways, so the shape of the day is set by the drive rather than by the stops. An early departure is what makes it work: it leaves time for Kumoba Pond, Shiraito Falls, and the Old Karuizawa Ginza street before deciding how much of the afternoon goes to the outlet mall or Harunire Terrace.
